Christian Kwabena Andrews, popularly known as Osofo Kyiri Abosom and founder of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), has declared that Ghana will need an uprising if President John Dramani Mahama fails as leader of the country.
He stated that the president has a lot of goodwill and must not disappoint the people.
The ordained man of God and presidential candidate of GUM in the 2024 presidential election indicated that government after government has failed Ghanaians in delivering on their mandate.
He said the president has the opportunity to be different and deliver on his promises to transform the lives of the people.
Speaking in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he said if Mahama fails, it means democracy has failed Ghanaians, and it will take an uprising to correct the wrongs our two major political parties have taken us through over the years.
He was responding to the question of whether the government of President Mahama will succeed.
In his response, he stated, “I do not have a problem with Mahama as a person, but his appointees will determine his success or failure.” He should not waste time firing those who are incompetent and instead hire new employees. If Mahama’s government fails to deliver and rescue this country, an uprising will be required before it can develop”.
When asked to clarify whether his uprising comment implied a coup, he said, “I am not proposing a coup. I’m talking about an uprising. I propose a scenario in which journalists, men of God, and chiefs take to the streets to demand better leadership. We cannot keep having politicians appoint people to serve their personal interests. We oppose coups because they are not a positive solution. Through my type of uprising, we can even impeach the president and vote for dedicated and competent leaders who want to transform Ghana rather than on partisan lines”.
Meanwhile, he has stated that evaluating President Mahama’s performance is premature, emphasising the need to give him more time before making an objective assessment of his performance.
He stated that approximately six months would be required to evaluate him effectively.
However, one major issue he wishes to address is the matter of taxes.
He recounted a scenario in which he purchased items costing Ghc2,700 to send to one of his children in America but was required to pay Ghc3,500 to have the items shipped abroad.
