The People’s National Party (PNP) has slammed President John Dramani Mahama over his decision to accept car gifts and declare and donate them to the state.
National Chairman and founder of the party, Janet Nabla, says there was no need for the president to have accepted the cars in the first place.
President John Mahama handed over two vehicles gifted to him to the state’s pool.
The move the president posited reinforces his administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
He made the declaration on Monday, May 5, in line with his newly unveiled code of conduct for government appointees.
But Madam Nabla has criticised the President, arguing that this constitutes a breach of the law on gifts.
She noted that the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has a policy on gifts which the President has breached and must be punished for.
She said the gifts received by the president formed part of gifts prohibited under the gift policy under the code of conduct and constituted bribery.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 97.5FM, the female politician said for the president to set a good example, he must be punished to serve as a deterrent to his appointees.
He told the host, Kwabena Agyapong, that the president has performed poorly in her first 120 days, scoring him minus two over ten.
He said the Code of Conduct launched by the president is a political chess game.
Is Mahama talking about the Code of Conduct? Eiiiii! Guidelines of CHRAJ prevent public officers from accepting gifts, and if someone wants to donate gifts, they should be gifted in the name of the public because it is a crime to accept gifts. President Mahama has confessed to accepting two vehicles as gifts, which constitutes a bribe. He should be punished for breaching the law.
President Mahama is a rule breaker. He has broken the law. Gifts are not free and have the tendency to make you do things that undermine transparency, accountability and ethical leadership. We would have to punish the president before going to others.”
