Former Kumasi Asante Kotoko attacking midfielder Jordan Opoku has expressed strong support for Coach Bashir Hayford’s recent assertions that some players from Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak engage in womanizing, excessive alcohol consumption, and substance abuse.
Opoku noted that such off-field misconduct has led to an unhealthy familiarity between players and supporters, which in turn has negatively impacted match attendance. “Football abhors indulgence in womanising, alcoholism, and narcotics,” he stated emphatically. He urged current footballers to uphold discipline and avoid these detrimental habits if they wish to excel and enjoy sustained success in their careers.
Reflecting on his own playing days, Opoku emphasised that self-discipline was paramount among players of his era, contributing significantly to their performance and professionalism.
Commenting on the situation at Asante Kotoko, Opoku admitted he was not surprised by the dismissal of Coach Prosper Narteh Ogum. However, he believes the coach should have been granted more time to restore the team’s form, especially since their league standing was not entirely discouraging at the time of his departure.
Regarding the upcoming FA Cup final, Opoku expressed confidence in Asante Kotoko’s chances. While acknowledging the quality of the Golden Stars, he maintained that Kotoko has what it takes to secure victory—though it will require determination and focus.
