We’ll strike against any company that will reduce fares – Online drivers

The Ghana Online Drivers Union, comprising Yabgo, Uber, Bolt and drivery drivers, has served a warning that they will strike against any of the companies that will reduce fares as announced by the Ghana Road Transport Union (GPRTU).

President of the Ghana Online Drivers Union, Francis Tengey, who disclosed this, said they were not consulted or invited to any meeting regarding the plan to reduce fares by 15%.

In an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he stated that ‘we were not consulted and therefore remain uninformed about this directive. The situation has led to a dispute between us and passengers. We express our dissatisfaction with the situation. Furthermore, we have made a resolute decision not to decrease our fares. Additionally, we are issuing a stern warning to the companies that if any of them lower their fares, we will take industrial action against them and switch to a different platform.”

He lamented that since 2016, efforts to have their sector regulated have not seen any progress, leading to several challenges and unfair treatment.

”The ride-hailing sector currently lacks regulatory oversight, which has led to systemic abuse. As a result, drivers in this sector face uncertain futures. Meaningful discussion of these issues can only occur once regulatory measures are implemented to improve sectoral activities. Government recognition of our activities is contingent upon the establishment of a regulatory framework.”

He also underscored the need for authorities to engage directly on matters relating to their activities and not the GPRTU.

“The GPRTU should not represent our interests. They don’t speak for us. The GPRTU is a separate entity, so if there is a discussion about transport, we must be invited and consulted’, he told host Kwabena Agyapong.
