The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced a significant advancement for the National Health Insurance Fund, increasing its allocation from GH₵6 billion to GH₵10 billion for 2025 in a strategic initiative to enhance healthcare accessibility.
The decision underscores the government’s commitment to fully support the NHIF, paving the way for improved healthcare outcomes.
According to the minister, this substantial investment will provide free primary healthcare services at clinics, address funding gaps resulting from the departure of donors such as USAID, and bolster the Mahama Cares Ghana Medical Trust Fund, which tackles chronic diseases like cancer and kidney conditions with determination.
Additionally, the minister announced that dialysis is now included in the NHIS benefit package, removing previous age-related restrictions and expanding access to this essential service.
Explaining the move, he stated that what the new government has done includes adding dialysis as part of the benefits package of the National Health Insurance Scheme, just like malaria and any other disease.
‘’So, the policy direction is that we are going to fund the dialysis issues in this country. That notwithstanding, we are bringing the Mahama Fund, which has already been established to be dedicated to chronic non-communicable diseases, and so any of these diseases that had not been captured by the NHIS Fund would then be captured by Mahama Cares because we all know that about 45% of our mortality is attributable to non-communicable diseases, and as a country, we need to urgently find a solution to it, especially at this critical time when our donors are withdrawing their funds.’’
