We’re striking because all other options have been exhausted – TUTAG Secretary

June 9, 2025
strike

The General Secretary of the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), Mr Sammuel Jabez Arkaifie, says it is not the intention of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), and the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) to declare a strike.

He said they have used all available means in having their issues resolved, but the government has shown no interest in having their concerns addressed.

The three key unions in tertiary education have jointly threatened a nationwide strike if the government fails to pay their book and research allowances by June 13, 2025.

In a statement issued on Monday, June 9, the three unions expressed frustration over what they described as the “undue delay” in releasing the exchange rate required to compute their book and research allowances.

According to them, the failure of the government in paying their book and research allowance has created “significant uncertainty and frustration” among members, as many depend on the funds to support academic work and research activities.

Mr. Sammuel Jabez Arkaifie stated in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM that after exhausting all avenues to resolve their issues since January, they have been left with no choice but to declare a strike action due to unfulfilled assurances from authorities, emphasising that the strike aims to underscore their demands as authorities have not taken their concerns seriously.

“The strike action is not something we enjoy, but since January, we have engaged authorities on the issues. However, all the assurances given to us have not been fulfilled, and so we have no other option but to declare a strike action. The bottom line is that authorities do not take us seriously, and so the strike action will certainly drum home our demand.”
