Twifo Atti Morkwa Constituency’s Member of Parliament, Hon. David T.D. Vondee, has underscored the critical challenges confronting schools within his constituency.

During a parliamentary session today, June 13, 2025, Hon. Vondee stressed the imperative for prompt action to resolve these pressing issues.

He decried the acute shortage of educators in rural schools, where one teacher frequently handles multiple classes simultaneously.

This situation, he emphasised, precludes students from receiving the individualised attention and quality education they merit.

To rectify this disparity, the MP advocates for the deployment of additional teachers to rural areas.

“In my constituency, for example, you will see a whole primary school and junior high school together, and you have about three tutors teaching from Class 1 to JHS 3.

So how will a tutor educate children in that condition? It is my prayer and hope that the Ministry of Education would actually look at distributing teachers to the rural areas.”

Hon. Vondee also highlighted the adverse impact of illegal mining, known as galamsey, on education in his constituency, noting that numerous young males are forsaking their studies to engage in galamsey.

He explained that the trend not only affects their educational attainment but also their future prospects, contributing to a concerning gender imbalance in schools.

“One of the reasons why our young men are not in the examination hall as compared to our young girls is that most of them find themselves, unfortunately, rather in a very difficult situation where they go into galamsey. It is my prayer and hope that in a year from now, considering His Excellency John Dramani Mahama’s approach to this galamsey menace, many of them will be back in school, and then our boys will be back in school.

Hon. Vondee commended former President John Dramani Mahama’s approach to tackling galamsey and expressed hope that the current administration would draw lessons from these policies to forge lasting solutions.

In a message to students in his constituency, Hon. Vondee wished them success in their examinations and encouraged them to anticipate a brighter future beyond academia, urging them to remain focused and capitalise on forthcoming opportunities.
