Lecturer commends WAEC for successful BECE, suggests non-teachers as invigilators

A lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba, Samuel Ziggah, has commended the West African Examination Council (WAEC) for the successful organisation of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

He stated that the swift arrest of some of the invigilators and teachers who were assisting the candidates to cheat during the exams was a step in the right direction.

“I’d like to commend WAEC and the teachers who prepared the candidates. So far, the process appears to have gone smoothly. This year, the questions were leaked from the examination centres rather than WAEC. Some of the teachers were accused of taking the questions and sending them out to be answered.”

Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he proposed that the use of teachers as invigilators was not the best since it makes it much easier for malpractices.

He claimed that some teachers assist candidates in cheating in order for them to achieve high grades so that the teachers who prepared them for the exams can be praised.

Mr Ziggah emphasised the importance of WAEC hiring non-teacher invigilators to ensure the exams’ integrity and transparency.

He went on to say that some candidates even bribe invigilators so they can cheat on exams.
