Mrs Sharon Larbie, a dietician at the Trust Hospital, has warned Ghanaians against consuming too much meat, eggs, milk, mutton, and other forms of protein, as it could harm their kidneys.
The medical professional explained that a kidney-friendly diet revolves around limited intake of salt and protein intake while prioritising whole, unprocessed foods and adequate hydration.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, she indicated that the approach can help individuals manage kidney disease, reduce the risk of complications, and improve overall health.
According to Mrs. Larbie, people should minimise processed and packaged foods and prioritise fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.
She told host Kwabena Agyapong, ’The most important key point is to eat a balanced diet. Prioritise regular check-ups, especially the ones for kidney function. You should take in fruits and vegetables, particularly fruits. Eating a balanced diet is not just for the wellbeing of your kidneys but your entire body. Minimise the intake of meat, milk, eggs, and other forms of protein to protect the kidney. Always take in protein in moderation because excessive intake of meat and other forms of protein can weaken the strength of the kidney”.
The dietician said one egg a day is the best since taking in two or more eggs, whether fried or boiled, is an unhealthy diet.
She went on to explain that people who have kidney disease are restricted in what they eat in order to protect their health.
Mrs Sharon Larbie cautioned against self-medication and excessive intake of herbal medicines, which she cautioned can damage the kidney.
She also mentioned that alcohol can harm the kidneys, so it should be consumed in moderation.
