The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has disclosed that users of marijuana, commonly known as “wee,” have taken the use of the illicit drug to another level by infusing it into kebabs.
Earlier reports from some media outlets indicated that certain sellers were infusing kebabs with “wee.” NACOC’s Deputy Director, Lawyer Twum Barimah, confirmed this during an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM, as part of activities to mark World Drug Day and raise awareness.
He noted that this intelligence has been gathered, and the commission is working to ensure that the trading and use of illicit drugs are thoroughly addressed.
“I want to especially caution young ladies who accompany their friends to pubs and eat kebabs without knowing the source,” he said.
He described the increasing use of illicit drugs among the youth as a national concern, warning that if this trend continues unchecked, Ghana could face a crisis in the near future.
“To clarify my point, I did not say that kebab sellers are the ones infusing meat with wee. I stated that some young people who abuse marijuana are now consuming kebabs infused with it. While they indulge, they mix cannabis with the meat or kebabs. We were simply cautioning those who are not involved in drug use to remain vigilant when in their company.”
Meanwhile, he has served notice that authorities will continue to crack down on illegal drug dealers and ensure they face the law.
“For those who are involved in this, we will go after them day and night, ensuring that if you are arrested, you will face the law. I have always advised those engaged in the illicit drug trade and have not yet been caught to take this opportunity to stop. If we catch you, we will prosecute you, no matter who you are. So, if you don’t want to go through this, the sooner you stop, the better.”
