He was arrested after attacking a pregnant woman, Ms. Ogechi Chidiebere, a Nigerian national residing in Ho, on May 21, 2025, around 4:00 AM, near New Housing, Ho. Armed with a machete, Avortide threatened Ms. Chidiebere, who was en route to an antenatal care appointment at the Ho Municipal Hospital.

He then robbed the pregnant woman of GHC 3,000.00 and a Tecno Spark 30c mobile phone valued at GHC 2,500.00, totaling GHC 5,500.00 in stolen property.

The police, through an intelligence-led operation, arrested Harmony Nbonu, alias “Arab Money,” a 23-year-old, at the Ho Main Market for possession of a stolen phone.

During interrogations, Nbonu mentioned Paul Avortide as the individual who sold him the phone for GHC 850.00.

The police then led Nbonu to arrest Paul Avortide at Matse, a suburb of Ho, where he had been in hiding.

He was subsequently charged with the offense of robbery, contrary to Section 149 of the Criminal Offenses ACT, 1960 (ACT 29).

Paul Avortide pleaded guilty and was sentenced on his own plea to 19 years imprisonment with hard labor, while the one who purchased the phone was acquitted and discharged.
