The Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF) has launched preparations to host the 2025 African Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships.
The Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF), under the leadership of its president, on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, appealed to stakeholders for crucial support to ensure a world-class event that will welcome over 300 athletes and officials from more than 20 African nations.
Mr Gideon Sackey, General Secretary of GWF, who spoke on behalf of President Jerry Ahmed Shaib, said the prestigious championship, awarded to Ghana in November 2024, promises to be a vibrant display of youthful talent and an opportunity to elevate Ghana’s standing in international sports.
He stated that intensive work has been ongoing behind the scenes to deliver a memorable competition.
The Ga Mashie Hall of the Trust Sports Emporium has been designated as the official venue, a facility renowned for its capacity to host major indoor events.
He disclosed that participants and dignitaries, including presidents and secretary generals from the Weightlifting Federation of Africa (WFA) and the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), would be accommodated at Accra City Hotel and Central Hotel.
The Weightlifting Federation of Africa has already demonstrated its commitment with a contribution of $15,000, a gesture that the GWF gratefully acknowledges.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Sports Authority have also been formally notified, with the GWF anticipating their strong support to bolster the hosting efforts.
Countries such as Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa are among the nations expected to send their brightest young lifters to compete against Ghana’s aspiring athletes.
Final confirmation of participation is slated for July 17.
“This championship is more than just a competition; it’s a platform to raise the bar for sports development in Ghana and to showcase our nation’s capacity to host world-class events,” stated the GWF President. “Together, we can demonstrate the true Ghanaian spirit of excellence, hospitality, and resilience.”
