Member of Parliament for Hemang Lower Denkyira Constituency, Hon. Lawrence Agyinsam, has posed critical questions to the Minister of Trade, Industry, and Agribusiness, Elizabeth Ofosu-Agyare, regarding policy measures to support the growth and competitiveness of the private sector.

During parliamentary proceedings, Hon. Agyinsam asked the Minister to outline initiatives being implemented to drive economic growth, create jobs, and improve living standards.

He also raised concerns about the potential impact of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) expiration on Ghana’s garment industry.

The African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) is a U.S. law enacted in 2000 that aims to boost economic development in sub-Saharan Africa by providing preferential trade access to the U.S. market.

It allows eligible African countries to export a wide range of products, including textiles, apparel, and agricultural goods, duty-free to the United States.

AGOA also encourages African nations to adopt market-based reforms, strengthen the rule of law, and promote economic and political stability.

Specifically, Hon. Agyinsam asked, “Hon. Minister, how are we going to help the Garment Industry should AGOA be discontinued?”

This query underscores the importance of AGOA in promoting Ghana’s exports, particularly in the garment sector, and seeks clarity on the government’s strategy to support the industry.

The MP’s questions demonstrate his interest in understanding the government’s plans to mitigate potential risks and ensure the continued growth of the garment industry.
