The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has disclosed that the Board of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has terminated 202 contracts valued at $227 million.

He revealed this when he took his turn at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.

According to him, the remaining 147 contracts are being subjected to additional strict scrutiny and may be terminated depending on the findings.

“The ECG Board has approved the outright termination of over 202 of these contracts. The total values of these contracts are estimated at $227 million, 1.17 million pounds, and 4.08 million euros.

“We are determined to ensure that we clean up the sector,” he said.

He further disclosed that the current government is spending 30% to 40% less than what was spent in 2024 by the previous Akufo-Addo government in terms of procurement.

“We are achieving better results with value for money and ensuring that we adhere to strict procurement processes,” the minister stressed.

He stated that the John Mahama-led administration will not be engaged in the kind of ‘reckless’ procurement undertaken by the previous government.

The minister indicated that 347 supply contracts which have failed to deliver goods within the specific areas are up for review.

“The goods in these containers were not part of the materials locked up at the port; these are new containers coming up following procurements which were undertaken previously.”

Meanwhile, he has also noted that the government has started installing 23,500 units of solar street lights.

“We are planning to move street lights away from the grid,” he said.

He added, “We have commenced the installation of 23,500 units of all-in-one solar street lights.”
