The Association of Assembly Members has commended President John Dramani Mahama for delivering on his campaign promise by paying Assembly Members a monthly allowance.
President of the Association, Ackah Nelson Frank, said the promise was one that the president spoke about since 2020, and finally he has delivered in implementing it.
He has, however, issued a caution to electorates in the various electoral areas not to use this as an opportunity to demand financial assistance from them.
He explained the money given to them is for their personal and individual use and not an amount meant to be distributed to electorates.
‘’We will first commend President John Dramani Mahama for delivering on his campaign promises. This is a promise he made in 2020, and he has delivered on it, and so we are grateful. But let me quickly add that we are appealing to our mothers, fathers, and other electorates not to use this as an opportunity to make financial demands. The allowance we are being paid is for our personal use and not meant to be distributed to anyone or to solve problems. So, we are appealing to them not to come to us with their demands. We will use this amount in attending to issues affecting us. So, for example, if we drive either a motor or a car and there is a challenge, we will use the same amount in attending to them or to fuel our vehicles or motorbikes,’’ he stated.
He confirmed that the various banks are working on the process and the Assembly Members will receive the amounts.
‘’We have anticipated this moment for a considerable period, and we are delighted that it has finally materialised. I will urge the Assembly Members to strive for excellence, surpassing their current performance.”
The government has released GH¢25 million to pay non-taxable allowances to assembly members across Ghana.
Each of the 9,085 assembly members will receive GH¢1,300 to cover allowances for April and May.
Minister Ahmed Ibrahim announced that each of the 9,085 assembly members in Ghana will receive GH¢1,300, totaling GH¢23.6 million for two months’ allowances.
The Banda Member of Parliament added that remaining amount had been lodged in an account and would be added to the next tranche to cover the next three months.
