Assembly members push for law to protect monthly allowance

The Ghana National Association of Assembly Members has announced its intention to advocate for legislation that would protect the monthly allowance introduced by the President John Mahama-led administration.

Ackah Nelson Frank, President of the Association, stated that this policy must be maintained and should not be abolished under any circumstances.

In an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he mentioned that the payment of a monthly allowance was something they had anticipated for years, and President Mahama had first discussed it in 2020.

He described this as a positive step and a motivation for Assembly Members nationwide to strive for excellence.

Ackah Nelson Frank also confirmed that plans were in motion to increase the allowance periodically.

Currently, an Assembly Member receives a monthly allowance of Ghc1,300, which the Association’s President says will increase annually.

“Authorities have confirmed that the allowance will increase annually. We are currently receiving Ghc1,300, but by next year, we will see an increase. We want to propose legislation to ensure that this policy is maintained and becomes binding on every successive government,” he stated.

He added, “Under the late John Evans Atta Mills, Assembly Members began receiving motorbikes, a practice that has been maintained and implemented by every government. We therefore want to propose legislation that will protect the monthly allowance and prevent any future government from scrapping it.”
