Former Deputy General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has commended the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for amending its constitution to make the party’s Chairman the leader at all times, whether in opposition or in government.
He was reacting to the party’s decision to amend its constitution at its delegates conference held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, where it considered 56 proposals for amendment, approved 54, and reflected.
Among the ones approved was the decision to amend the constitution to make the party’s Chairman leader at all times, whether in opposition or in government.
In a series of tweets, Mr. Anyidoho, who also worked as Communication Director at the presidency under the late John Evans Atta Mills, noted that the decision will allow for supremacy so the party will checkmate the government when in office.

“Very positive and forward-looking move to make the National Chairman the Leader of the Party at all times. It allows for more supremacy of the Party to be able to checkmate the Government especially when in power.”
He described it as an interesting development, stating that this was something he had championed for years and it was not too late for the NDC to also consider it.
“Very interesting development. National Chmn, Leader at all times? I’v always supported this position to maintain the supremacy of the parties as happens elsewhere. As Deputy GS, I supported such a move in NDC – not too late though to change. TG our democracy is growing.”
He was also of the view that the party ought to then focus critically on who they elect as their chairman now that it has amended its provision to make its Chairman the leader at all times.

“Of course, it only means that lots more critical thinking must inform who they decide to be their National Chairman & Leader. It adds a new page to Ghana’s political narrative book and it looks positively interesting.”
Mr. Anyidoho added that from a governance point of view, the National Chairman becoming the leader will prevent that individual from being on any board.
“From a purely governance perspective, I want to believe that once the NC is the Leader, it will insulate the person from being on any Board. Because why would the Leader want to serve on a Board under a Minister? Let’s see how the narrative goes.”
