Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak-Mohammed has supervised the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ghana Prisons Service and the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), initiating the “Youth in Prisons Service Assistance” programme.
The minister and member of parliament for the Asawase constituency explained that the initiative will help in addressing youth unemployment and bolstering the operational capabilities of the Ghana Prisons Service.
In a statement issued by the minister and shared on his official Facebook page, he noted that the agreement will facilitate the recruitment of 5,000 young Ghanaians as prison assistants.
The initiative, fully funded by the YEA, aims to provide meaningful employment opportunities while enhancing the capacity of the Prisons Service across the country.Under the terms of the MoU, the YEA will cover the full cost of the training programme and provide monthly stipends to all beneficiaries.
The Ghana Prisons Service will be responsible for developing the training curriculum, conducting the comprehensive training, and strategically deploying the newly recruited prisons assistants nationwide.
In his remarks, the minister expressed profound gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for this “bold policy intervention”, emphasising the government’s commitment to delivering “practical, results-driven solutions to the unemployment challenge”.
The MoU is the latest in a series of partnerships between the YEA and Ghana’s key security agencies, which already include the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service.

This landmark agreement will see the recruitment of 5,000 young Ghanaians as Prisons Assistants under a new initiative dubbed “Youth in Prisons Service Assistance.”
This strategic collaboration aims to address youth unemployment while enhancing the operational capacity of the Ghana Prisons Service. Under the MoU, YEA will fully fund the training programme and provide monthly stipends to all beneficiaries. The Ghana Prisons Service will develop the training curriculum, conduct the training, and deploy the recruits across the country.
I expressed deep appreciation to H.E. the President for this bold policy intervention in tackling unemployment. The government remains committed to “walking the talk” by providing practical, results-driven solutions to the unemployment challenge.
This initiative adds to a series of impactful collaborations between the YEA and key security agencies, including the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service. It is our hope that this programme will not only create sustainable jobs for our youth but also contribute meaningfully to national peace and security.
