Ghanaian women’s football coach Yusif Basigi, who in 2024 signed a one-year deal with Tanzanian side Simba Queens, has stated that sponsorship and funding for women’s football in Tanzania are far superior to that of Ghana.
He explained that while women’s soccer in Ghana struggles due to a lack of sponsorship and sufficient financial support, this is not the case in Tanzania.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on Rainbow Sports, the celebrated coach indicated that female footballers in Tanzania enjoy special packages, including insurance policies, and are well-paid to motivate them.
He made these remarks in response to a question asking him to outline the differences between the Ghanaian and Tanzanian women’s leagues.
“The difference is that they have sponsors, and when I talk of sponsors, their men’s teams sponsor the women’s teams,” Basigi explained.
“Whatever sponsorship the men get, it trickles down to the women because they operate under one administration. From the board up to management, the men are in charge, and they dedicate enough support to the women’s league.”
He continued, “Due to this, Simba Queens has as many as eleven foreign players who are paid extremely well, and none of them earns less than $1,000. This clearly shows that the sponsorship for the women’s league is really good. Yanga also has about ten foreign players, and they are also paying them well.”
Basigi stressed that “what this implies is that they are paying the female footballers well and also promoting the women’s league. Simba’s male team has quite a number of sponsors.
They have seven sponsors, and five of them sponsor the women’s team. The sponsorship package includes a lot of benefits: water, insurance, and money, and that is how they are able to sponsor the team. The women’s league is just like the EPL; the foreign players in the starting lineup for these two teams I spoke about are more than the local players.”
