Ghanaians want to feel it in their pockets – NPP MP criticizes government’s economic management

Member of Parliament for Kade, Hon. Alexander Agyare, has criticised the government’s spending record, saying that despite introducing programs in March, the finance minister is failing to allocate funds for them.

Speaking during the debate on the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review, Hon. Agyare questioned the government’s claims of low inflation, pointing out that prices of essential goods and services are still high. “When you talk of inflation being 13% and the lending rate being 27%, how does it work?” he asked.

The MP cited examples of price increases in his constituency, including a ball of kenkey that used to cost 3 cedis now costing between 5 and 7 cedis, and a tube of yam costing 7 cedis. He also noted that a bottle of water that used to cost 28 cedis now costs 36 cedis.

Hon. Agyare emphasised that Ghanaians are no longer interested in book values but rather in the reality of prices in the market. “Ghanaians expect that if the exchange rate is slow, if inflation is slow, then Ghanaians want to feel it in their pocket,” he said.

The MP urged the government to take a more realistic approach to managing the economy and to prioritise the needs of Ghanaians.
