An amount of $1 million has been released by the government to help settle outstanding arrears owed to authorities at the University of Memphis in the United States.
This was disclosed by the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat.
The release of the funds comes after students complained about their inability to pay their fees amid fears of looming scholarship revocations, evictions, and possible deportations of Ghanaian students.
Addressing a conference held in Accra on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, the Registrar of the Secretariat, Alex Kwaku Asafo-Agyei, stated that authorities have taken steps in addressing the situation.
He noted that the government has already made a partial payment of $400,000 to the university and is preparing to transfer an additional $1 million.
The remaining debt stands at approximately $2.2 million, he added.
“We are on course with the issues regarding the Ghanaian students at the University of Memphis. Ghanaian students will not be deported; I give you that assurance,” he said.
“Because the audit is ongoing, we are not paying all. We owe them $3.6 million in total, and we have paid $400,000 so far. We are now processing a $1 million payment.
“The money is currently with the Controller and Accountant General’s Department, and it will move from there to the Bank of Ghana, then to Washington for the final transfer,” he concluded.
