Hon. Jerry Ahmed Shaib, Member of Parliament for the Weija Gbawe constituency, has brought attention to the plight of former Ghanaian footballer Ali Jarrah, a key player in the country’s U-17 World Cup-winning team in 1991 and runner-up in 1993.
Despite his contributions to Ghana’s football history, Jarrah’s career was cut short due to injury, and he has received little support in retirement.
Shaib emphasised the need for government intervention to support retired athletes, particularly those who suffer career-ending injuries while representing the nation.
He called for comprehensive financial, entrepreneurial, and social support systems to ensure that retired athletes live with dignity and opportunity.
“The government must take concrete steps to support our national heroes beyond just applause,” Shaib said.
“They deserve recognition, protection, and sustainable support to improve their post-retirement lives.” Shaib’s passionate plea highlights the need for a more robust support system for Ghana’s retired athletes.”
