The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, has called for an immediate end to illegal mining activities, also known as galamsey.
His remarks were made during a night of remembrance for eight individuals, including two government ministers, who tragically lost their lives in a recent helicopter crash.
According to Mr. Kwetey, the victims were on a national assignment related to mining when the crash occurred.
He highlighted that the journey that claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah and Environment, Science, and Technology Minister Murtala Mohammed was centered around gold.
“Gold which was supposed to be a blessing to this country has rather become a means by which poison is affecting our country’s waters, forests, and lands,” he stated, emphasizing that the victims lost their lives in an effort to make gold a true blessing for the nation again.
Mr. Kwetey made these comments at the forecourt of the State House during a night of reflection and memory for the victims. He stressed that a fitting tribute to their memory would be to continue their fight.
“What we can do in honour of their memory is to ensure that this battle is waged until gold again becomes the true essence of this beautiful nation, gold becomes a true embodiment of what this nation was meant to become. A true golden nation that is supposed to inspire not just the West African Region, Africa, and beyond. May the Almighty God grant them rest, may their memories remain a light for all who labor in the vineyard of our great party,” he said, in memory of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) members who were among the deceased.
