The 2025 Africa Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championship has kicked off in Accra, Ghana, bringing together over 200 athletes and officials from 13 African countries. The event, which runs from August 18 to 22, 2025, is being held at the Ga Mashie Hall inside the Trust Sports Emporium.
In his welcome address, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, President of the Ghana Weightlifting Federation, expressed Ghana’s commitment to hosting a successful and memorable championship. He encouraged young athletes to compete with courage, fairness, and passion, emphasising that every lift contributes to their personal journey and the future of African weightlifting.
Khaled Mehalhel, President of the Weightlifting Federation of Africa, praised Ghana for staging an outstanding opening ceremony and encouraged the country to aim higher.
He suggested that Ghana has the capacity to host the World Championship in the near future, citing the country’s ability to organise events of international standards.
The opening ceremony was attended by notable figures, including Ben Nunoo Mensah, former President of the Ghana Olympic Committee; Richard Akpokavie, current GOC President; Veronica Commey, Deputy Director General of the National Sports Authority; and representatives of the Ga Mantse.
The championship promises to be an exciting celebration of youth, sports, and African unity, with talented young weightlifters from across the continent competing for top honours.
