President of the Ghana National Association of Farmers and Fishermen (GNAFF), Michael Tettey Kwetey, has strongly criticised Dr. David Tenkorang Twum, the General Secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), for what he called derogatory remarks against farmers.
He stated that people like Mr. Tenkorang are among those who have made others despise farming and agriculture.
He said Dr. Tenkorang made offensive remarks about the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, as well as Ghanaian farmers.
Speaking in an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he indicated that, ‘’what Dr. Tenkorang said was derogatory, and he ought to apologise. He is part of the reasons why some people perceive farming or agriculture as punishment. Aren’t farmers humans? Is nursing far superior to farming, or are nurses’ superior human beings to farmers?’’
He told host Kwabena Agyapong that they expect the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) to take disciplinary action against Dr. David Tenkorang Twum for his unethical behaviour.
‘’In modern times, people perceive agriculture as punishment because when students do something wrong and are punished, they are asked to weed, and so people think agriculture is punishment. But agriculture is a lucrative business, and so when we allow people like Dr. Tenkorang to make derogatory remarks about farming, it is unfortunate.’’
He said there are several prominent Ghanaians who are farmers aside from what we know them for; hence, farmers ought to be respected. He added that, ‘’why did he choose farmers? Why did he not mention lawyers, radio presenters, doctors, and other professionals? He lacks self-respect, and if he is a man of integrity and has any form of decency, he should apologise for his unfortunate remarks.
