The Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) UK Chapter, Kingsley Adumattah Agyapong, widely known as Wofa K, has publicly criticized the party’s national leadership, accusing them of violating the established guidelines for the presidential primary election.
In a recent interview on Rainbow Radio 92.4FM’s “As it is In Ghana” with Sir Richie, Mr. Agyapong contended that the party should not have accepted filing fees from any aspiring candidate until they had successfully passed the vetting process. He argued that the proper procedure outlined in the party’s constitution is for interested individuals to pick up and file their forms, undergo vetting, and only then, if qualified, proceed with paying the filing fee.
Wofa K expressed concern that the party has become too lenient with its internal discipline and adherence to its own laws, effectively bypassing laid-down procedures. He emphasized the necessity of having stringent processes during internal elections to prevent unqualified candidates from participating.
“We have become so flexible that we are bypassing some guidelines. We need strong rules to lock some people out of the process,” he stated. “Those who have breached the party’s laws or crossed certain boundaries ought to be suspended immediately and prevented from contesting. But due to fear, some of our leaders cannot tell us the truth. There may be some unqualified people who should not even contest, but due to the fear I spoke about, they are being allowed to go through.”
He further claimed that every aspiring candidate who has filed to contest the primary has, in his view, already violated the party’s laws. “All the five aspirants have failed, and because the national leadership is weak and cannot chastise them, they continue to breach the laws of the party,” he asserted.
Addressing the aspiring candidates, Mr. Agyapong urged them to be more circumspect and to cease the “needless attacks and insults,” which he warned could jeopardise the party’s prospects in the 2028 elections. He stressed the importance of unity, stating that after the primary, all members must rally behind the elected flagbearer to secure a victory in 2028.
“At the point we are today, that is not the final point. Any of the five who wins will need the support of the others to secure victory in 2028. The insults and attacks are needless, and so they should be guided. Let’s unite as a party so that after the primary, we don’t have damages to deal with.”
