Burkina Faso’s ruling junta on Monday, September 1, 2025, unanimously passed a law criminalising homosexuality.
Persons found guilty would spend up to five years in prison.
According to authorities, the measure is part of a broader reform of family and citizenship legislation.
The draft law was adopted without opposition by all 71 unelected members of the transitional parliament, which has been in place since two military coups in 2022.
Justice Minister Edasso Rodrigue Bayala announced the new provisions on national broadcaster RTB, saying: “The law provides for a prison sentence of between two and five years as well as fines.”
According to him, foreign nationals convicted under the legislation will be expelled from the country.
“If a person is a perpetrator of homosexual or similar practices, all the bizarre behavior, they will go before the judge.”
Authorities said the law will be “popularized through an awareness campaign” to inform the public about its provisions.
