President John Dramani Mahama has paid a working visit to the Ofankor road project site, which is part of the ongoing expansion of the Accra–Nsawam highway.
The purpose of the visit was to allow the President to assess the progress of work on the project, which is expected to ease traffic congestion and improve transport flow along the busy corridor.
During the visit, President Mahama questioned why a loan was taken for the project, yet the funds for construction were depleted while the road remained unfinished. He announced that his administration will investigate the matter and added that the project has now been moved under the ‘Big Push’ initiative.
The ‘Big Push’ is an extensive road construction and rehabilitation program across the country. It is a strategic commitment to inject at least $2 billion annually into infrastructure development, with its rollout beginning robustly in the 2025 national budget.
Speaking at the site on Wednesday, September 3, 2026, President Mahama described the road project as a major arterial road that connects two of Ghana’s major cities, noting that any challenges with the contract affect commuters.
“And so we were quite concerned about the complaints coming from the travelling public, and so we are happy that the traffic is flowing. But what I say to the contractors is that yes, we know you have work to do, but one of your duties is site management to make sure that your work does not impede the flow of traffic. So, you must make adequate arrangements so that even while you are working, you are creating the conditions for traffic to flow. I can understand what happened; a loan was taken for this project, and I don’t understand why the money is finished and the project is not over, and we have had to come to pay a supplementary of almost Ghc78 million from Government of Ghana Funds. That is something we need to find out. What really happened? How come the loan that was taken was not enough? Was it that the estimate of the project was done properly?”
He stressed the need for the contractors to ensure the smooth flow of traffic, even as they work, so they do not impede traffic.
The contractors assured the President that the project would be completed by the second quarter of 2026.
