Aspiring National Organizer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Kwadwo Agyei Yeboah, popularly known as Nana Kay, has posited that the decision by the party’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe aka Abronye DC, to embark on a hunger strike is not a bad thing to do.
He remarked that the party member, who is currently on remand, is being treated unfairly, and so his decision to go on a hunger strike was to protest the abuse he is being subjected to.
Abronye DC has begun a hunger strike while in police custody, his lawyer confirmed last week.
His lawyer, Enoch Afoakwa, stated the decision is a protest against what Abronye considers political persecution following his arrest and subsequent two-week remand.
“Once you are being handled this way, will you trust that the same people handling you in a manner as if you have committed a treasonable offence—when they give you water, will you take it? When they give you food, will you take it? Certainly, he needs to protect his life and under the circumstances, that is the reason he is on hunger strike,” he stated.
Nana Kay responded to this by stating that Jesus Christ embarked on a forty-day period of fasting and prayer and did not die, and so if their party member has decided to go on a week-long hunger strike, he would not die.
He also admitted that what Abronye is being subjected to is nothing but political persecution.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, the communications team member of the NPP stated, “If Jesus Christ as a human being did a forty-day fast, if the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo did forty days, if pastors and Muslims also do forty-day fasts and our brother Abronye has decided to embark on a week-long hunger strike, and decided to pray to God, I don’t see anything wrong with that.”
He, however, served a strong warning to the NDC, stating that, “to those of you who have praised the government over what is going on, remember that power will soon change and power will shift to a different administration.”
He lamented that we have witnessed people in a similar manner insult chiefs and prominent men in Ghana but were not dealt with as Abronye DC is being treated.
He mentioned Kelvin Ekow Taylor as one of the examples of those who have insulted chiefs, including traditional rulers, and yet a court struck out an order for his arrest and the incumbent government went ahead to provide him with state protection.
