A group of former Assembly members from the Ho West District Assembly have penned a strongly-worded letter to their Presiding Member, Hon. Mathew Atsrim, expressing profound frustration over the decade-long delay in the payment of their ex-gratia allowances.
The aggrieved members claim that all previous efforts to retrieve the GH₵1,000 allowance have been unsuccessful.
According to Mr. Jonathan Agbeka, the group’s convenor, despite repeated assurances, the payment has been outstanding for 10 years.
The group is now urging the Presiding Member to expedite the process immediately.
In an interview on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Nyankonton Mu Nsem, Mr. Agbeka stated that authorities have a concerning practice of only paying the allowances to the bereaved families of deceased former members during funeral ceremonies as Nsawa Bodie’.
The group insists they should receive these payments while they are still alive to “enjoy the fruit of their labour.”
The convenor said their demands, stating, “We are demanding that the ex-gratia allowances be paid without further delay. Any further delay will lead to severe consequences, and we will take the necessary actions to protect our rights if the matter is not resolved promptly.”
He lamented the tragic situation, noting that “several of our members have died, and authorities prefer going to their funerals to pay these monies to bereaved families as ‘Nsaa Bodie.’ That is terrible, and we can no longer tolerate it.”
