A young man, identified as Kwame Mamud and believed to be in his early 30s, drowned while attempting to cross the Pra River in a canoe during an illegal mining operation.
The incident occurred at Twifo Bimpong-Agya in the Twifo Atti-Morkwa District of the Central Region.
Details emerging indicate that the incident was reported to the Twifo Atti-Morkwa District Police Command and the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO). Initial search efforts by residents proved unsuccessful.
However, following traditional rites and libation performed by local chiefs, the body was eventually retrieved from the river.
The deceased was said to be a native of northern Ghana who had recently moved to the area to engage in illegal mining.
The body has since been deposited at the Twifo Praso District Hospital mortuary for preservation, while police investigations into the incident are underway.
