Michael Craig Afful, Convenor of Energy News Africa, has stated that Ghanaians should prepare for additional increases in electricity tariffs, despite the recent 1.14% adjustment announced by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).
The PURC has approved a 1.14% upward adjustment in electricity tariffs for the fourth quarter of 2025, which will be effective starting October 1, 2025.
This decision was formally announced in a statement on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.
Mr. Afful noted that the approved increase does not align with the recent proposal from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
ECG had requested an increase in its Distribution Service Charge (DSC1) from GHS19.0875/kWh to an average of GHS61.8028/kWh.
The utility company cited inflation, currency depreciation, high interest rates, and the need to recover infrastructure investment costs as reasons for its request.
The PURC is currently consulting with stakeholders across the country to gather input before making a final decision.
Mr. Afful explained that the 1.14% increase is primarily a result of exchange rate fluctuations, with the PURC using a projected weighted average of GHS12.37 to $1.
He also acknowledged that the PURC’s statement accurately reflects other economic considerations, such as pegging domestic inflation at an annual average of 12.43% for the fourth quarter.
Speaking on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Nyankonton Mu Nsem, he said, “Ghanaians should prepare for further increases in electricity tariffs. The PURC is still considering the proposed adjustment requested by ECG and engaging stakeholders nationwide, so we should expect an adjustment that is far more than the 1.14% from January 2026.”
