MoE rolls out PTAs nationwide with new guidelines

Haruna

The Ministry of Education is rolling out a new nationwide framework for Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) to enhance collaboration between schools and families.

Final policy guidelines, developed by the National Curriculum Review Committee, have been submitted to the Ministry.

In a statement, Minister Haruna Iddrisu emphasized that education is a shared responsibility, urging parents and teachers to work together to improve learning outcomes.

“PTAs are back. Now there is an established norm with guidelines to facilitate and support their work. Socialisation is a shared responsibility, particularly for young learners. While the child spends time at home, significant hours are spent in school, making both parents and teachers equally responsible for shaping the child. Ghana’s concept of socialisation must be shared,” he said.

On his part, the Chairman of the Committee on the Guidelines, Kofi Asare, indicated that PTAs must play an active role in school-level decision-making rather than being seen merely as fundraisers.

He explained that “These guidelines seek to prevent PTAs from being reduced to contributors of funds. Their key role must be participation in decisions to improve teaching and learning outcomes.

“The scope of PTAs in school development has now been tailored more towards involvement in learning and decision-making processes.’’
