Look in the mirror; the image you see is the reason we lost, not Bawumia’ – Suhum MP

The Member of Parliament for the Suhum constituency, Frank Asiedu Bekoe, has refuted claims that the former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, was solely responsible for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Mr. Asiedu Bekoe stressed that the party’s loss was a collective outcome that cannot be attributed to a single individual.

The MP, popularly known as Protozoa, urged party members to engage in self-reflection, asserting that every member contributed to the defeat.

”I am surprised when people accuse Dr. Bawumia of single-handedly causing our defeat. Every member of the elephant family contributed to our loss, and we must accept that reality,” he stated.

“We faced challenges; Ghanaians took offence at some of the actions we took as a party while in office. I am part of it, you are part of it, and therefore we cannot place the blame on Dr. Bawumia alone.”

He reiterated his call for introspection: “Let us look at ourselves in the mirror. The individual image you see is part of the reason the party lost. It is a shared blame; let us all accept it and move on. This is not the time to apportion blame. It is the time to support the NPP towards victory in 2028. The NPP is the only party that brings transformation to Ghanaians when in office, so let us unite and pursue victory. I submit to the gallant men and women, fellow delegates of the NPP, that if we want to win the 2028 elections, our best bet is Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.”

Mr. Asiedu Bekoe argued that Dr. Bawumia possesses a reconciliatory spirit that would enable him to effectively unite the party with all other candidates who contest the primaries.

He suggested that with Dr. Bawumia as the candidate, the process of post-presidential primary reconciliation would be less challenging and costly.

Protozoa also commended Dr. Bawumia, noting that the former Vice President has not engaged in a campaign of insults, unlike some of his opponents.

This, he stressed, demonstrates Dr. Bawumia’s maturity and his prioritisation of party peace and unity over personal gain.
