Atwima Mponua: Five confirmed dead in galamsey pit collapse

Five people have been confirmed dead after an illegal gold mining pit collapsed at Kasotie in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.

A search team from the National Disaster Organisation (NADMO) was deployed to the scene to embark on a rescue mission.

Officials from NADMO confirmed that five bodies have been retrieved while efforts are still underway to robe the rest.

They are being supported by community volunteers.

On October 1, 2025, at approximately 4:30 pm, a collapse occurred at an abandoned mining pit, entrapping the illegal miners.

As of 7:30 am on Thursday, October 2, nine bodies had been recovered and four others were in critical condition.

The Nkawie Divisional Police transported the bodies of the deceased persons to the Nyinahini Mortuary for preservation.
