The Walewale District Police Command in the North East Region has apprehended an individual in connection with the alleged possession of an offensive weapon and the infliction of multiple wounds on a victim in Walewale.
The suspect has been identified as Rafai Tahiru, aged 25.
A statement released by the Police indicates that on Saturday, October 4, 2025, the suspect and two other individuals, who are currently at large, allegedly accused the victim of stealing a mobile phone belonging to Mr. Tahiru.
According to the police account, the suspect and his accomplices allegedly restrained the victim by tying his hands and legs, placed him in a tricycle, and proceeded to whip him with canes and inflict severe matchete wounds on his forehead and body.
The victim was rescued by bystanders and immediately transported to the Walewale Government Hospital for treatment.
The suspects fled the scene following the incident.
However, acting on intelligence, the police successfully arrested Rafai Tahiru, while efforts to locate and apprehend the two accomplices are ongoing.
The official statement from the Police confirmed the arrest and the evidence recovered:
”The suspects fled the scene after committing the crime. However, on Sunday, 5/10/2025, based on intelligence, suspect Rafai Tahiru was arrested at his hideout in Tampulungu, a suburb of Walewale”
The police statement further detailed the discovery of potential evidence:
”A search in the suspect’s room led to the discovery of a matchet which was stained with blood and believed to be the matchet the suspects used to inflict the wounds on the victim.”
Suspect Rafai Tahiru is scheduled to be arraigned before court as the investigation continues to secure the arrest of the remaining suspects.
