Pay us at least eight months of the arrears owed to us – Railway Workers

October 6, 2025
RAILWAY WORKERS

Franklin Kwabena, a National Executive Member for the Railway Workers Union, has confirmed that the Union has been directed by the National Labour Commission (NLC) to re-enter discussions with management and authorities regarding a payment plan for outstanding arrears.

Mr. Kwabena reported that the Union met with the Deputy Transport Minister, the Chief Executive Officer of the Railways, and other key officials.

During these discussions, the Union formally demanded the immediate payment of all outstanding salary arrears and the provision of necessary retooling to enhance operational efficiency.

Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he disclosed that the NLC has set a deadline of October 9, 2025, for the parties to submit any agreed-upon resolution.

”The NLC directed that we should return to the negotiation table to specifically discuss the payment plan for our arrears and what measures authorities intend to put in place to make our work more efficient,” Mr. Kwabena stated.

“Since that initial meeting, we have not received any further communication from the authorities, although we have been given assurances that they are actively working on a proposal.”

He further outlined the Union’s expectation: they anticipate an upfront payment covering eight months of the arrears, with a structured payment plan to be established for the remaining balance.

Mr. Kwabena stressed that the Union’s membership would find it difficult to accept any proposal that fails to meet this minimum eight-month upfront payment.

”We have been given numerous promises regarding the payment of these arrears; however, nothing has ever been formally documented,” he asserted. “We require them to be candid and committed to ensuring all our arrears are paid.”

Mr. Franklin Kwabena maintained that many Union members are facing significant financial hardship as a direct result of the unpaid arrears, emphasising that the failure of management to pay these outstanding sums is having a serious negative impact on their families and personal lives.
