The Motorcycle Courier Union, Ghana, has voiced concern regarding what it describes as pervasive acts of extortion, intimidation, and harassment allegedly perpetrated by officers of the Ghana Police Service.
Mr. Stephen Adenyo, the National Chairman of the Union, specifically highlighted the actions of some officers within the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), accusing them of systematically extorting money from Union members.
During an interview on the ‘Frontline’ show, hosted by Kwabena Agyapong on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Mr. Adenyo stated that even when riders possess all mandatory operational documents, these officers persistently seek avenues for extortion.
He lamented that the demanded amounts range between GHS100 and GHS200 per incident.
Mr. Adenyo asserted that this situation is grossly unjust. Consequently, the Union has officially petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, urging his immediate intervention.
He disclosed that the petition was submitted early this week. The Union expects the IGP to address the concerns raised and call the officers to order.
Failing a satisfactory response, the Union has indicated its intention to organize a demonstration and proceed to the Police Headquarters to demand a resolution.
Mr. Adenyo further elaborated on the alleged police conduct:”Police officers from the MTTD are harassing, intimidating, and extorting from us. Since the departure of the former IGP Dampare, MTTD officers have returned to the streets, aggressively extorting from our members. Even with all our documents in order, they consistently look for reasons to effect arrests and extort money from the riders. They track us, forcibly remove our ignition keys, and obstruct our work.
This abuse is the reason behind our petition to the IGP. We are demanding that he restrain his men. Should this not happen, we will be compelled to demonstrate and march on the Police Headquarters to secure a definitive resolution.”
