Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has categorically stated that Ghana will not accept Kilmar Abrego Garcia as a deportee from the United States of America.
The Minister’s response follows reports that the U.S. was considering deporting Abrego Garcia to Ghana.
An ABC News publication claimed the Department of Homeland Security had announced its decision to deport him to the West African nation.
Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national who resided in Maryland with his wife and children, was controversially deported in March to El Salvador’s CECOT mega-prison.
This action occurred despite a 2019 court order barring his deportation to El Salvador due to a stated fear of persecution.
He has been accused of being a member of the criminal gang MS-13, an accusation his family and legal counsel vehemently deny.
Reacting to the news and the public concern raised by Ghanaians on social media, the Foreign Affairs Minister reiterated Ghana’s commitment not to accept him as a deportee.
He confirmed that he has officially communicated the country’s position on the matter to the United States government.
He further clarified that Ghana had only agreed to accept a limited number of non-criminal deportees of African descent and would not accept individuals designated as criminals.
His post on Facebook read “Ghana is not accepting Abrego Garcia.
He cannot be deported to Ghana.
This has been directly and unambiguously conveyed to US authorities.
In my interactions with US officials, I made clear that our understanding to accept a limited number of non-criminal West Africans, purely on the grounds of African solidarity and humanitarian principles would not be expanded.
Ghana strongly objects to these misleading media reports.”
