Former Hearts of Oak defender Dan Quaye has strongly criticized those advocating for the dismissal of Otto Addo, the head coach of Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars.
The retired footballer argued that despite any perceived shortcomings, Coach Addo has successfully navigated the team to the brink of World Cup qualification and should be given the opportunity to lead the team in the tournament.
Speaking during an interview on Rainbow Sports on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Quaye emphasized the unfairness of removing the coach now. He stated that Addo should not do all the “hard work” of qualifying the team only for someone else to step in and claim the glory.
Quaye dismissed the calls for Addo’s sacking as needless, stressing the importance of valuing “one of our own.”
”If you had plans of sacking him, you should have done so a long time ago. You don’t wait for him to qualify us for the World Cup and then decide to sack him and employ a new coach. You have to stop that. He is also one of us. We are so fixated on sacking coaches at the least opportunity. It is not the best. Let’s allow him to coach the team; I am optimistic he will do well.”
Mr Quaye concluded by expressing his confidence in the team’s ability to perform well and represent Ghana with distinction on the world stage.
”I have confidence in the team. With dedication and commitment, they will be able to fly the flag of Ghana high. We have to remain focused. The majority of the players have the experience; they have also played with a lot of the foreign players who would be participating in the tournament, and so I am certain that with proper training and a plan, they will excel.”
