The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) of Ghana is set to upgrade its international travel documents to bolster their global acceptance and ensure compliance with international standards.
This significant development was announced by the Chief Executive of the DVLA, Julius Neequaye Kotey, on his official social media platform.
Mr. Kotey explained that as a signatory to the United Nations’ Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, the DVLA is proactively addressing challenges encountered by Ghanaian drivers whose current International Driver’s Licenses (IDLs) and International Vehicle Permits (IVPs) have occasionally faced rejection in some foreign jurisdictions.
The DVLA will be launching Biometric International Driver’s Licenses and Biometric International Vehicle Permits.
This initiative is a core part of efforts to ensure worldwide recognition and enhanced security for Ghanaian documentation.
Mr. Kotey stated that the new documents will incorporate a bio-data page to ensure full compliance with specifications set by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
This strategic move is expected to establish a modern, secure, and globally verifiable standard for Ghanaian drivers and vehicles traveling abroad.
The issuance of the new biometric documents will commence at all DVLA stations across Ghana beginning in 2026.
Additionally, this initiative is designed to provide Ghanaians residing abroad with international driving and vehicle documentation that adheres to the highest globally recognized standards.
