A group affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Save NPP Now, has issued a strong statement asserting that the party is currently at a crossroads and requires a formidable personality to represent it in the 2028 presidential election.
The statement, released by the group’s convenor, Kwesi Korang, admonished party delegates to rigorously scrutinize all five aspiring candidates who have been cleared to contest in the January 31, 2026 presidential primaries.
Mr. Korang emphasised that the party must elect a candidate who will be accepted not only by party delegates but, crucially, by the Ghanaian electorate come December 7, 2028.
He recalled the advice the party had received in the past, citing both former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s counsel in 2007 and Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s statement in 2023, both urging the election of a candidate who would be acceptable to the broader Ghanaian populace.
”As a party, we need to scrutinize the five gentlemen who have offered themselves to lead the Party in the 2028 general elections. NPP is not choosing a candidate for only NPP people, but we are choosing a candidate who will later be sent to the Ghanaian people for them to choose between our candidate and that of other political parties. So, it is better we don’t elect a candidate of our choice but the choice of the Ghanaian people – a candidate Ghanaians will accept without hesitation.
Let’s remind ourselves of the advice Former President J.A. Kufuor gave us in 2007 during our Presidential Primaries and also that of His Royal Majesty Otumfour Osei Tutu in 2023 at Manhyia Palace. They both told us to choose a candidate who will be later accepted by all Ghanaians, not just the choice of NPP people alone.”
While acknowledging that all five aspiring candidates are distinguished party members, he cautioned that not all of them are sufficiently formidable to secure the victory the NPP desires.
The statement further urged the leadership of the NPP to maintain diligence in the organization of the primaries, ensuring that party members elect a marketable candidate and avoid selecting a “bad commodity.”
”We urge the party leadership to do diligent work so that the party will come out with a marketable candidate by the end of the process. Sometimes, people say, “Everybody that the party will choose, we will all support him and work to make sure he wins power.” Fellow party members, we should also get it right that not everybody can win political power, no matter how many times you present them. The repetition of a bad commodity to the market doesn’t make it a better thing, so we should be mindful.”

Immediate Release
CALL FOR A DEBATE
NPP at Crossroads and Needs a Formidable Candidate to Cross 2028 General Elections
We, the concerned members of the New Patriotic Party, are calling on the party leadership to organize a debate for the party’s gallant men who have shown up to contest for the party’s Presidential primaries coming on January 31st, 2026. We believe it will help the delegates make an informed decision and choose a candidate whose marketing will be easier in 2028.
As a party, we need to scrutinize the five gentlemen who have offered themselves to lead the Party in the 2028 general elections.
They both told us to choose a candidate who will be later accepted by all Ghanaians, not just the choice of NPP people alone.
We appeal to all the delegates to think deeply before making a decision on who should lead the party to the 2028 general elections.
The aspirants are:
- Kennedy Ohene Agyapong
- Dr. Bryan Acheampong
- Dr. Alhaji Bawumia
- Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum
- Kwabena Agyei Agyepong
They are all party people, very distinguished gentlemen, but not everyone of them can give us power. We need power, so let’s be thoughtful in our decision-making.
We urge the party leadership to do diligent work so that the party will come out with a marketable candidate by the end of the process. Sometimes, people say, “Everybody that the party will choose, we will all support him and work to make sure he wins power.” Fellow party members, we should also get it right that not everybody can win political power, no matter how many times you present them. The repetition of a bad commodity to the market doesn’t make it a better thing, so we should be mindful.
In conclusion, we beg the Elections Committee (EC) of the party and the party leadership to organize a debate for the five aspirants.
