The Oti Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Foster Dzre, has confirmed that five people survived the recent boat accident that tragically resulted in 15 fatalities.
Mr. Dzre provided the update during an interview on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Frontline program, hosted by Kwabena Agyapong.
During the interview, the director confirmed that the boat was being operated by an 11-year-old boy, who was among those who perished.
Mr. Dzre explained that the fatal sequence of events began when the minor attempted to retrieve a container, used to bail water from the boat, after it had fallen overboard. The 11-year-old subsequently fell into the water and drowned.
“The 11-year-old boy who was controlling the private boat was attempting to remove a container from the water but unfortunately he drowned, following which the boat was left without anyone controlling it until it capsized, leading to the death of the 15 people,” he stated, confirming the count of five survivors.
When questioned about the availability of life jackets, Mr. Dzre noted that while jackets are usually available, residents in the area often decline to use them, citing a belief in their own swimming ability to survive any situation.
Describing the incident as unfortunate, Foster Dzre confirmed that a full investigation into the accident is currently underway.
He also commended the swift and effective collaboration between the Police and the Military in their joint efforts during the rescue and recovery mission.
