NHIS in Crisis: Patients Forced to Pay Out of Pocket – Hon Jerry Ahmed

The Member of Parliament for the Weija Gbawe Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Mr Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating state of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), stating that the scheme is no longer functioning effectively.

According to him, patients across the country are increasingly being compelled to pay for healthcare services out of pocket, a situation that signals a troubling return to the cash-and-carry system the NHIS was designed to replace.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Mr Shaib lamented that even pregnant women undergoing Caesarean Sections (CS) are being charged exorbitant fees ranging from ₵5,000 to ₵9,000, which he described as unacceptable.

He therefore called on the government to take urgent steps to restore the efficiency and credibility of the NHIS to ensure that Ghanaians, especially vulnerable groups, can access quality healthcare without financial hardship.
