The Commercial Transport Operators have called for the arrest and prosecution of former Roads and Highways Minister Mr. Kwesi Amoako-Atta.
The Acting Chairman of the Association, Asonaba Nana Wiredu, says the former Minister’s decision to suspend the collection of road tolls caused financial loss to the state.
Speaking in an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he stated that the former Minister took the decision despite failing to heed good counsel.
He said that at the time, the Minister used the E-levy as an excuse, refusing to be reasoned with and claiming the levy—which a section of Ghanaians opposed—was the solution to all our problems.
Asonaba Nana Wiredu stated that the road toll was a good source of generating revenue, adding that foreigners who move into the country with their heavy loads were paying tolls, but after it was scrapped, the country was deprived of that resource mobilization avenue.
He said a sprinter bus, for example, during the implementation paid not less than Gh¢20 per vehicle depending on the number of trips per bus. He added that a sprinter bus may in a year or two pay more than Gh¢7,200, and “when you multiply this by the number of buses plying the various toll booths, it means we lost several millions of Ghana cedis.”
