Gospel musician and medical professional Philipa Baafi has disclosed that numerous attendees who made substantial pledges during the launch of her first studio album have yet to honour their commitments.
Speaking on the mid-morning drive with Eddie Ray on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, the musician explained that the sheer volume of these initial promises, particularly those made in foreign currencies including US dollars, fostered a widespread perception that she had instantly amassed wealth.
Philipa Baafi recalled believing that the album release would be an “easy ride” for sales.
However, she quickly learnt the commercial reality: releasing an album was merely the starting point, demanding intense personal effort in promotion and securing distributors to ensure her work was actually purchased.
Philipa Baafi detailed the unexpected financial pressure this situation created: “When I launched my first and second albums, it was not an easy ride. After I launched my first album, I thought that was the end, not knowing I had to do promotions and engage distributors so the cassettes would be sold.
In those days, people held the perception that when you launch an album and invite people, you make money, but that was not the case. It was not easy. I was young, and at the event, people made huge pledges in dollars and several amounts of cedis, but they never honoured them. My family and friends came to me asking for money, thinking I had made lots of money. I even remember gathering some of the cassettes into polythene bags and going out to sell them. It took the grace of God to see me through those difficult moments.”
Recounting the demanding early days, she shared a vivid anecdote that highlights her dedication: “I even remember gathering some of the cassettes into polythene bags and going out to sell them.” She credits the “grace of God” for helping her navigate those difficult financial moments.
She ended by acknowledging the professional support of Dada Dickson, who she noted played a key role in distributing some of her songs.
