The Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has officially launched a strategic partnership with the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) under the project titled “Enhancing Parliamentary Action on Climate Change: Strengthening the Role of Parliament in Reducing Methane Emissions.”

This initiative represents a forward-looking effort that leverages the pivotal role of the Parliament of Ghana in accelerating national and global action to reduce methane emissions. The project seeks to empower parliament to play a more proactive role in addressing climate change and promoting sustainable environmental practices.

The Speaker underscored the crucial role of Parliament in leading the national response to climate change and called for greater advocacy to amplify the voices of vulnerable communities most affected by its impacts. Through this collaboration legislators will be better equipped to formulate effective policies, enact robust legislation and provide the necessary oversight to ensure environmental sustainability.

“Through our collective efforts parliament will emerge as a true champion of methane reduction and climate resilience,” the speaker affirmed.

The launch ceremony brought together a distinguished gathering of leaders and members of parliament, the clerk to parliament, deputy clerks, management of the parliamentary service, representatives of civil society organisations, and members of the media.
