Ernest Owusu Bempah, the Deputy Communications Director for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has disclosed that the late former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings maintained a profound relationship with President John Dramani Mahama.
Speaking on the ‘As it is in Ghana’ program on Rainbow Radio 92.4FM, UK, Mr. Bempah contradicted public perception by asserting that Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings possessed a generous spirit and a good heart.
He emphasised her significant role in President Mahama’s political journey, dating back to his time as a parliamentary candidate.
Mr. Bempah revealed that the founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement was a crucial campaigner for Mr. Mahama during his run for Member of Parliament in the Bole Bamboi constituency.
”One thing that people don’t know is that President Mahama regards Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings as his political mother. She had supported him politically,” Mr. Bempah stated. “First, while he was the MP for Bole Bamboi, the late former First Lady had a solid relationship with him. She campaigned in that constituency for Mr. John Dramani Mahama. They were very close… Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings played a key role in building the political career of President John Dramani Mahama. So, the death of Mrs. Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings is a big blow to President John Dramani.”
He acknowledged that the two experienced political differences later in their careers, but insisted this does not diminish her foundational contribution to President Mahama’s political ascent. Given this background, Mr. Bempah considers President Mahama a key player in the funeral arrangements.
Mr. Bempah commended President Mahama for the decision to accord the former First Lady a state burial, acknowledging her distinguished service in both her national and private life.
Furthermore, he revealed that Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings’ strong ties extended to other former Presidents, including Nana Akufo-Addo and John Agyekum Kufuor.
”Don’t forget that she also had a solid relationship with former President Akufo-Addo. Akufo-Addo had a political and private history with the late former First Lady. They were very good friends. Their families had a good relationship,” he noted.
He added that she also shared a “positive relationship with former President John Agyekum Kufuor,” mentioning that she once indicated a blood relation to Mr. Kufuor.
Mr. Bempah stressed that all three Presidents (Mahama, Akufo-Addo, and Kufuor) shared positive connections with the late former First Lady.
