The Motorcycle Courier Union Ghana (MCUG) has demanded an immediate public apology from the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Hon. Sam George, following defamatory comments he made during his appearance before the Public Accounts Committee on Monday, November 3, 2025.
Minister’s Call for Regulation and Allegations
Appearing before the Public Accounts Committee hearing in Parliament on the Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission, Minister George stressed the critical need for regulation within the country’s courier services.
He cited concerns over the prevalence of tampering with customers’ packages, specifically mentioning instances where customers allegedly receive food orders that have been pilfered.
“We need to have regulation of our courier services because people order food, it arrives, and the meat has been eaten,” the minister stated.
Mr Stephen Adenyo, the National Chairman of the MCUG, expressed the Union’s profound disagreement with the Minister’s assertions, labelling them as “insulting, damaging, and defamatory”.
Speaking in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Mr Adenyo categorically denied the claims of package tampering or theft of food items, particularly meat.
He stated that the minister’s commentary has distraught and insulted their members.
Mr Adenyo clarified that riders understand the severity of such actions, noting that theft or tampering could lead to being “reported and blocked from the apps”.
He cited a specific exception where a rider, after making a delivery attempt and being unable to contact the recipient, was instructed by the dispatching company to consume or return the food due to the non-response.
“The assertions made by the Minister are totally false. We do not tamper with packages or steal meat from food meant for customers… We are disappointed and feel insulted by what he said. We are therefore demanding an apology from the minister,” Mr Adenyo asserted.
Despite the controversy, the National Chairman affirmed the MCUG’s support for plans to regulate the courier sector. However, he also raised a concern that the Union has not been consulted regarding the new bill currently being draughted.
Mr Adenyo disclosed that the Union will be preparing a formal written position to engage with the Ministry on the matter.
