The Beverage Consumers and Bar Owners Association of Ghana, colloquially known as the Drunkards Association of Ghana, has issued an appeal to the government for the provision of helmets and reflective gear to enhance member safety during nighttime hours.
The association seeks to prevent members from being struck by vehicles on the road.
Mr. Moses Onyah, also known as “Dry Bone,”
President of the association, stated in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm that members are frequently involved in accidents, often being knocked down by speeding vehicles and motorbikes while crossing roads.
He emphasised that reflectors and helmets are necessary tools to mitigate this risk.
Mr. Onyah claims the association has a substantial membership base of approximately 16.7 million individuals, drawn from various sectors of social life, including journalists, civil servants, and other professionals.
The association reported that recent deaths of prominent personalities have reportedly led to an increase in alcohol consumption among its members. This development prompted the association to impose a temporary halt to drinking activities, encouraging a period of self-care and reflection.
Mr. Onyah indicated that following this one-week break, members are expected to resume alcohol consumption, particularly as preparations begin for the upcoming festive season.
In light of this anticipated increase in activity and subsequent risk, the association is specifically requesting the immediate provision of the safety equipment.
”We are appealing to President John Dramani Mahama and his government to extend a hand to us,” Mr. Onyah stated. “We require reflectors and helmets so that our members will be safe. As we prepare for the Christmas break, we urge the government to donate these items to us. Our members are often knocked down, especially during the evening.”
